Ebay charging TAXES on Food/drink items for California !
In California, we do not get charged tax on most food/drink items. It's different than when you go out to eat of course or get a coffee at Starbucks, but I'm talking about purchasing for example dry food or drink items online from anyone. If the delivery address is in California we should not get taxed. Ebay is taxing now on the very same coffee I have purchased multiple times from the same seller. Of course, with the great system for contacting anyone at Ebay, there is no one I can convey this to. They SHOULD NOT BE TAXING CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS FOR THOSE PARTICULAR ITEMS! Who else in California is noticing this? I went to Amazon to see if I bought the item from them if they were charging the tax..... they did not. Then I went to the grocery store chain here in California called Ralphs as if to purchase online for either delivery to house or for pick up in store, they did not charge tax either.

Mentor4 months agoeBay bases sales tax on the category the item is listed in and not what the item actually is. So if the seller lists in a taxable category then sales tax will be charged. Please provide us with the item number of the item you purchased so we can see how the seller listed the item.

OP4 months agoThe seller I was going to buy from just took the listing down a short time ago. But the item number is 177420551660.
I did check other sellers as well and they too showed tax would be collected when i went to checkout.
The specific item is: Nescafé Ice Roast, Instant Coffee, 6 oz
For a test, i checked if a box of cereal was going to get taxed, but it did not show tax on that. Why then on Coffee?
Shipping address would be in California.
