eBay’s Taxes and Fees
Why is eBay permitted to charge sales tax for items that are purchased from a seller in another geographic location? How is it that when I buy something from someone in China, I’m charged sales tax by eBay? This is a complete sham! Further, why is sales tax being calculated/charged on both the cost of the item PLUS shipping fees??? How does eBay get away with this? I’m tired of eBay’s charging practices and I’d like to know why no one else is screaming about this.

It is the state you are having items shipped to that requires … not ‘permits’ … eBay to collect tax on internet purchases.
It is the same state that decreed that shipping cost should be taxed along with the item cost.
It is to your state legislators you should direct your screams … as they are the ones telling eBay what they must tax.
Do you really think that eBay made up all this taxing itself?

·2 years agoYou’re charged tax because your state that you live in requires that when you purchase something online, you as the buyer are charged tax. It’s your state’s law, not something eBay is doing on a whim.

·2 years agoI wanted to add separately. This is due to the 2018 Supreme Court decision in the case of South Dakota vs. Wayfair. South Dakota wanted buyers in their state to pay tax on items purchased online, not just in a brick and mortar location.
The state prevailed, and other states quickly jumped on that cash bandwagon. Most - but not all - states also require that shipping is taxed.
