Don't understand how I lost the auction.

Question

My friend had a max bid of nearly double what the last bid shown as winning had, but received a message that said "you didn't win this auction." What happened there?

If you mean s/he entered a bid higher than the "current bid" amount showing BEFORE s/he bid, then it sounds like the HIDDEN maximum for that bid was higher than your friend's maximum (if your friend was willing to pay $x, why wouldn't someone else be willing to pay $x=.01?). Or someone else bid higher than your friend during the time between when that "current bid" was actually current and when the auction ended. Or it was "Reserve not met".

If you mean something else you need to be more specific

Without being able to view the bidding history, it is impossible to guess other than there was another bidder with a higher bid or the bid did not meet a Reserve Price set by the seller.
