Does anyone experience incorrect taxes charged?
I bought an item for $100 after an offer. I was charged 9.21% while my state tax rate is 6.75%. What gives? I contacted the seller but he said it is eBay’s thing. Who can I contact next?

Mentor1 year agoTax is on the entire purchase price, including shipping. eBay calculates and collects the tax, not the seller.

Was there shipping charges on that item? Is shipping taxed in your jurisdiction?
Did you have your 9 digit zip code for that purchase?

OP1 year agoShipping was a separate item. Yes, the 9 digit zip code was included in the purchase.

OP1 year agoShipping was $36.51. Looks like OH includes shipping as parts of the sales so it is taxable. Learned something new today thanks to you.

·1 year agoMost people with this complaint are missing one or both of two things:
1. Whether the state requires the "price" that the rate is applied to include the s/h charges. Most states do, and even those who generally don't, often do in particular circumstances, which circumstances tend to be those prevailing on eBay transactions (e.g. the seller is not required to limit the s/h to the carrier's charges but can include handling charges).
2. Whether there are any local taxes at the delivery address (determined by the zipcode; where there are multiple rates within a 5 digit zipcode==e.g. city vs. county, or other taxing authorities like school boards or hospital districts--the 9 digit zipcode if given sets the ones applied, otherwise it is likely to be the highest total rate in that zipcode).
Like they say in math classes: "Show your work."
