DJI Pocket 3 and an Example appearing to be Seller Product Deception Fraud
I first looked to send a notification to ebay's fraud team about a product using a seller fraud tactic I see regularly.
I started researching the 'DJI Osmo Pocket 3' which has a built in 3-axis gimble. This is the current version of this product and retails new at $600 plus. The previous version is 'DJI Osmo Pocket 2' priced between $200 and $300 depending on condition.
I always research with search engines looking for a sale or best price. In this case with a best case saving maybe $100 plus or minus a bit.
In the top results I found a lot of ebay sellers listing it in $250-$400 range. I quickly clicked through while thinking this can't right, causing me to look closely and quickly identifying what these sellers are doing.
The product from DJI is the Osmo Pocket. Legitimate merchants display the name, version, the description. For example, DJI's lists the product as 'Osmo Pocket 3' for $649 (just went on sale for $519 when I went to grab screen shots) at the time of this writing.
The result I clicked to is an ebay listing for a listing titled 'DJI OSMO POCKET 3-axis gimbal 4K camera' priced $416, used in good condition. See what they're doing? They are (and many others on and off ebay) are using the feature '3-axis gimble' in the product title and properly pricing the used 'good' condition. No where in the listing do they provide the actual product version but if you look at the product photos it is clearly a version '2'. The screen size and ability to rotate is a clear distinguishing feature.
They also claim the product title is technically correct. The only reason to do this is to defraud. Most I found are not so clever and include version '2' in details and priced correctly for that version. Legit sellers on ebay as well as many merchants and marketplaces properly listed the product name, version and pricing.
Anyone can see customers are being defrauded by this intentional obfuscation of the product version and market value. This is quickly verifiable by doing a search for 'dji osmo pocket 3' on any search engine, market or directly in ebay.
Another easy example of this type of fraud can be found searching for Atari 2600 games. Some sellers are showing product of games 'the box the game came in' listed drastically less expensive than the market price. Then somewhere in the listing they provide the information this is for the packaging only. This covers them from outright fraud but know there will people who don't miss that for any number of reasons. Seriously, do a search on ebay but for on the most popular search and notice how the title truncations are used.
I couldn't find a way to contact ebay about this so I'm posting in the community. Even if this type of fraud is legal, it's not moral and consumers should be aware. These are two examples of many products that sellers are applying this tactic to.
