Difficult buyer
Greetings! I sold an espresso machine to someone four states away. From the beginning I knew I would have problems with this customer. When they made the purchase, the estimated delivery arrival was for Monday, Dec 23, 2024. On Tuesday, Dec 17, the buyer messaged me frustrated that the package had not yet arrived. They said if it didn't arrive by Friday, Dec 20, they were going to cancel the order. I informed them that when they made the purchase, the delivery date was listed as the 23rd. I didn't hear from them again until the 23rd. That's when the complaints started. One after another. "The item is missing this" "the item isn't as described" "the item isn't the model number advertised", and finally, after sending extra parts and material and also a postal money order to appease them, they demanded a full refund. eBay sided with the buyer. So, for selling an $800 espresso machine for $233, I now have to pay almost $400 out of pocket, plus shipping for the extras and the money order I mailed. All of this has been documented via eBay messages, yet eBay has vehemently sides with the buyer and is now deducting $400 ($388 to be exact) and there is no recourse for me. Oh, and I have yet to get the item back! What are my avenues of remedy here? This encounter has left me so fed up I took down all of my listings! Help!

You were not obligated to provide the buyer with the "extra parts and materials" or the money order, so Ebay won't help you with that aspect.
You should have just waited until the buyer filed the Return Request, then you could have responded by accepting the request, provide the prepaid return shipping label and refund when you received the item.
If Ebay had to get involved in order to refund the buyer, they probably let the buyer keep the item.
