"Description exceeded max limits" - - no it didn't
Another glitch that eBay needs to fix after someone at the company obviously messed up. My descriptions are usually around 200 words and pasted in from Microsoft Word. No problems with this for years. Now, suddenly, my "Description exceeded the maximum limit." So, I typed the same description directly into the box on eBay and got the same message. No, I did not exceed the limit.

Mentor2 years ago@besthomemovies There's hidden code in Word Programs that can cause it to bloat the number of characters over limit. I forget what setting you need to use in Word to prevent this.
I do know you can copy and paste the Word text into Notepad to remove the extra bloated code. Notepad strips the code that causes this issue.
When you typed the text directly in to the description box did you first clear the all of the HTML code?
Check the "show HTML code" box and then delete all of the code.
Let me know if you still have problems and I'll "phone a friend" that is better with this than I am.

OP2 years agoBut why now, all of a sudden, after using Word/paste for 20 years? It doesn't make sense. I just used that method two days ago and everything was fine. I start off with a blank Word document, write my description and paste. No links, nothing funky. Just text. Gotta be an eBay glitch.

OP2 years agoI deleted that auction completely and started over. Just to be sure, I pasted the Word text into Notepad. This time everything went fine. Must've been a weird glitch on that particular page.

Mentor2 years ago@besthomemovies. Let me tag @shipscript. I can't remember the word setting that you said stopped the "bloat"

Here is another seller with exactly the same problem:

It took many years of copy/paste and sell-similar to accrue the buildup. I looked at your ended listings and they all have Word bloat. Your most recent one finally hit the limit at half a million characters! Open any of your listings for editing. On the description box, open HTML view. You will see the long list of Word code (7000 lines of code — over 100 pages if printed) before you get to your own description at the very bottom.
The top few lines of your garbage Word code is shown on the left, so you know what to look for. Your description is at the end. Some sellers have the description broken between sections of Word code.
