Delayed shipments that deliver after issuing refund
As a seller in this scenario, I had a recent experience where I sold an item, dropped it off at the post office, and to put it plainly, it never updated within tracking. Always said waiting on package. Days and days passed, no movement or updates. Looked to me like USPS didn’t scan in my item, and I figured it must be lost, stolen or somehow just got missed, and proactively I worked with the buyer to issue her a full refund. I was going to issue a claim with USPS for my missing item. I have so much trouble trying to accomplish that on usps website, I stop for my own sanity. Then suddenly it’s 15 days after I dropped the package off, and I get a notification from USPS that the item tracking has updated, and it is now in MA, on the way to destination. (Mailed from San Diego, destination is PA).
Here’s my question:
I have already issued the refund, but I didn’t cancel the order. The buyer wants the item, but how do we either reverse the refund or have her re-issue payment in this odd scenario?

OP8 months agoOk, so the package updated today. Should I go ahead and file the claim with eBay? Honestly I was trying to keep eBay from getting involved because I didn’t want any type of hit to my seller rating, so I refunded the buyer before any claims on either side. I’ll be able to prove when the item delivers, tracking will show that in the coming days. Taking payment outside of EBay isn’t allowed, I’m assuming even in this type of scenario. so am I just s.o.l.? I’m surprised EBay wouldn’t help me as the seller recoup original payment if it’s proven the item delivered after all?
And yes, it’s Definitely noted on the future drop offs, I’ll never just rely on USPS blindly again, I’ll always stand in line for a receipt.

IN THE FUTURE:
-Print you labels through eBay
-Stand in line at the Post Office and have the clerk scan your packages, leave with a receipt, DO NOT JUST DROP THEM OFF.
-Have the Buyer file a claim that they did not receive their item and refund them THROUGH THE CLAIM.
-Here is why to do it that way. eBay launched a new Seller Protection for sellers who print their labels through eBay. If a Seller loses a Buyer’s claim that they did not receive their item and refunded the Buyer then eBay will reimburse the Seller IF the package is delivered later and tracking confirms the delivery.
-If a package runs late file a missing mail piece claim with USPS
-You cannot "reverse" a refund. If the package is delivered to the Buyer and they want to pay you then they will have to do it outside eBay. eBay is no longer involved since you refunded the Buyer. And if you did not do the refund through an official claim you will not get reimbursed by eBay.
