Defect Questions
Hello,
Ebay is mostly a hobby for me, so I don't put a ton of energy understanding every nuance. However, I just did realize I was getting ding'd for "transactions I cancelled for being out-of-stock" or "transaction defect rate." A few questions:
1.Now, as far as I know I didn't cancel any transactions. I might have ended auctions, but they were no "transactions" per say in that no one had bought the item. So, that's a mystery to me. Perhaps I used the wrong mechanism to end a buy-it-now auction and got ding'd?
2. What is the best way to end a buy-it-now auction? Sometimes I sell items that my family (or I) end up wanting to keep, so I want to end an auction on it. How do I do that without getting ding'd for it?
3. Also, it appears that the rate is a yearly one. So, is the only way to improve this number sell more over the course of the year (cancel fewer items) and eventually it goes down? And can you go in and out of "above standard" and "standard" in a months time? So, the 6% fee can be removed within a month's period?
4. I notice on this page: https://www.ebay.com/sellerhelp/defect it says that if I was evaluated today, I'd be "below standard" but if I go to the dashboard page (https://sellerstandards.ebay.com/dashboard), it says if I were evaluated today, I'd be "above standard." This discrepancy makes me nervous about their calculations. Any insight on this?

OP3 years ago- What about the discrepancy on the two web site pages? One saying I'm below if rated today, and one saying I'm above if rated today? Is that a concern?
- And, just to clarify, if I'm above on the 20th, the extra 6% fee will go away, correct?
I still don't think any of the items cancelled had bids on them or were "won." I do mainly buy-it-now items and only cancel if the buyer asks. So, this is strange to me.

Mentor3 years agoTo end an auction that has not received any bids, or a fixed price listing, go to
Seller Hub > Listings > Active
Place a check mark in the box to the left of each listing, click ACTIONS at the top, click End listing. No defect if no bids were placed.
You do receive a defect if you have a winner of an auction, or a purchaser for a Buy It Now listing, using the Out of stock option. ebay does not want unhappy buyers.
ebay evaluates sellers on the 20th of each month. If you are below standard, you need to increase sales in order to decrease the percentage of defects. As you improve during the month, the rating stays the same for a month until the 20th of the next month.
