Deemed Offensive material
I had a listing with figurines of Gone with the Wind and it was taken down and deemed offensive. How and why would these figurines be offensive? And to whom?

Mentor2 years ago@lady_madonna I was just reading that last night. GWTW was on TCM and I watched some of it and looked up Ms McDaniel. She caught flack from her fellow Black actors and contemporaries and she said she would rather make $700 playing a maid than $7 being one. Clark Gable was her ally.

Mentor2 years agoI am aware of her accomplishments as well. We are just stating the rules. It really doesn't matter what any of us think. We all must abide by eBay's rules, whether we agree or not.

OP2 years agoSure. Once we know the rules, we can abide. But I didn't know until it happened. And eBay needs to do a better job at scouring all the listings and removing everything that is offensive and not just random listings as people report them.

According to Ebay:
"Listings or content that promote, perpetuate or glorify hatred, violence, or discrimination, including on the grounds of race, ethnicity, color, religion, disability, national origin, sex, gender and gender identity or sexual orientation, aren't allowed. This includes but is not limited to the following:

OP2 years agoThanks for the info. It's obvious that someone reported my listing.
I just searched the offensive word and tons of listing pop up. Meanwhile, what I did was merely call the figurine by the character's name in the movie. SMH.

Mentor2 years agoMy guess is you listed figurines of the slave characters and possibly used the word Mammy. Glorifying slavery is offensive and the word Mammy is a derogative term for a stereotype. I think most people would find that offensive.
You have to play by eBay's rules. If they removed it, don't try to relist it or you could be suspended or worse.

OP2 years agoNote taken about listing Hattie McDaniel's character name in the movie.
I'm a woman of color and I wasn't glorifying slavery.
Hattie McDaniel was an American actress, singer-songwriter, and comedienne. For her role in Gone with the Wind, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the first African American to win an Oscar. Mc Daniel's award-winning performance was generally seen as a symbol of progress for African Americans.

I am well aware of Ms. McDaniel's accolades.
Did the figurine portray the slave woman "Mammy" she played in the movie? Or the actual person she was in real life?

OP2 years agoNo worries. I just learned that the character of Mammy from Gone With The Wind will no longer be allowed to be listed. I didn't know that. And yes, it was a figurine of the character in the movie. In my opinion, I imagine that in 1939, the actual person in real life wasn't treated with any more respect or dignity than the character.

No, she was not treated with respect or dignity, how sad.
According to Wikipedia:
Disgraceful. ☹ï¸
