Deadbeat buyers
Summary: blacksheep_customs shares their frustration with eBay's process for car auctions, particularly dealing with non-paying bidders. They suggest implementing a system where a credit card deposit is required to prevent buyers from ghosting. golfingaddict explains that due to legal complexities, eBay cannot enforce such measures and recommends setting a reserve price. However, blacksheep_customs remains dissatisfied, stating that they will stop using eBay because of the lack of seller protection, despite having followed all suggested procedures.
How many of you have tried to sell a car on eBay and run into the same thing I have on multiple occasions, a dead beat buyer. Someone that out bids everyone and wins the auction and then vanishes?
Problem is eBay holds nobody accountable for winning a bid then never paying their debt. It’s beyond annoying! They need to change things so if you are going to bid on a car you should put your credit card up so if you win the deposit is paid immediately to the seller. This will stop the buyer from bidding and ghosting and sticking people like me with paying for the listing. I will be deleting my eBay acct because this is nonsense and eBay does nothing! Terrible platform, lesson learned.

OP1 week agoYeah I put it back on marketplace, which also sucks, but figured i'd put a low reserve on it on ebay and see what happened...I won't make that mistake again.

Mentor2 weeks agoSince automobile bids are non-binding, it is unlikely that eBay would change to require a deposit paid when the bidders places a bid.
Because of the complexity and legal requirements tied to vehicles and properties, buyers and sellers may need additional steps like inspections and paperwork before completing a sale. You can include information in your listings about buyers' next steps, like deposits and transfer paperwork.
It is allowed to add a reserve price to your listing to ensure your minimum price is met. However, you must not encourage bidding without the intent to complete the purchase or retract bids in categories where bids are binding.
See the full non-binding bid policy here.

OP2 weeks ago · EditedDid all that. Was clear on instructions, reserve etc. none of it helps. I won’t use eBay moving forward. No reason to sell on there is there’s no protection to sellers. Other auction sites give the seller protection so if eBay is going to continue to allow this to happen then you can have it. Don’t give me the legal issues eBay is big enough where they can get all that straight and make this an honorable place to sell and buy. It currently is not and excuses as to why they are such a platform doesn’t change anything. Until eBay fixes this, I’ll be deleting my acct.
