dead bats
I will not be buying anything from eBay until people stop selling dead bats. It's particularly disturbing that some of the bats are endangered species.

Selling endangered animals or items made from endangered animals is prohibited.
If you see a listing for an endangered animal product, you can report that to eBay using the "report item" link in the body of the description.

OP3 years agoSince there is often no information about where an animal was collected or even what species it is, it's rather hard to know whether it is prohibited or endangered. This is especially true in the case of antique taxidermies. It is not uncommon for a pant or an animal that is not on the endangered species list (world wide) to be listed by the IUCN for a specific geographic area. This is true for the painted bat,
Kerivoula picta, which is on the Bangladesh Red List published in 2015 by IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature). It may be common in other parts of its range, and It may be legal to kill and taxidermy these bats but that doesn't make it okay.
There are also differences between subspecies. This makes it nearly impossible to monitor based on a tiny photo on eBay. For all you know sellers are getting away with selling endangered species and you would never know.

OP3 years agoI'm not sure where to find the listing number but the seller is bicbugs. Just do a search for "bat animal." You'll find several different species. I don't know about all the species for sale, but the painted bat, Kerivoula picta, is on the Bangladesh Red List published in 2015 by IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature). It may be common in other parts of its range, and It may be legal to kill and taxidermy these bats but that doesn't make it okay. The decline of so many species of bats world wide, Including some in the US makes this a travesty as far as I'm concerned.

By the way, I was surprised to get any response at all. Thank you.
