Damaged return questions
Summary: greaseg_0 sold a Canon PowerShot camera, which was returned damaged, unlike its pre-shipment condition. The buyer provided a photo showing damage that was not present in the seller's original pictures. rfmtm advised that if a return request for a damaged item was opened, the seller must refund by the indicated date, and appeals might be difficult unless it can be shown that the buyer caused the damage. greaseg_0 expressed frustration, suggesting the system is flawed and questioning the value of the service.
I sold and shipped this Canon PowerShot SX600 HS in the physical condition documented in my original listing/pre-shipment photographs. The buyer received the camera and had it for approximately one week before reporting that the lens would not extend properly.
The camera has now been returned with physical damage that was not present in my pre-shipment photographs. There is visible gouging/impact damage around the front lens bezel near the “18X IS” marking, and the lens assembly is visibly misaligned.
Importantly, the buyer provided a photograph while the camera was still in her possession. Her own photograph already shows the physical damage near the “18X IS” marking that is now present on the returned camera. That damage is not visible in my pre-shipment photographs.
I have preserved my original photos, the buyer-supplied photo, photos of the camera immediately after return, and photos of the return packaging. I cannot determine exactly when or how the damage occurred, and I am not alleging that the buyer intentionally caused it. I am reporting that the photographic timeline shows the item's physical condition changed after it left my possession and it was returned to me materially damaged and in a different condition than shipped. So do I have to issue the refund first and then appeal?

Mentor1 week ago@greaseg_0 This is the same on all internet sales sites I have purchased from... The item must arrive in the same condition as stated on the listing.
I understand that this is frustrating.
If the buyer files a refund request SAYING that the item is not as described then you need to accept the return and issue the return shipping label.
The eBay Money Back Guarantee overrules your returns policy. Your return policy is only for buyers remorse refund requests such as doesn't fit, changed mind, etc.
If you do not accept the return willingly then the buyer can ask eBay to step in and force a refund. You do not get your seller's fees back, you get a defect and the buyer may be allowed to keep the item.
If the buyer abuses the eBay MBG in some way then you can report them but it doesn't get your money back:

Sellers have protection for return abuse if they offer FREE RETURN shipping on their listings OR if they are a Top Rated seller and offer 30 days or greater returns. The seller can then reduce the refund amount by up to 50% if the buyer sends a different item or somehow reduces the value of the item.
Seller protection:
https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/selling-policies/seller-protections?id=4345&st=12&pos=4&query=Seller%20protections&intent=seller%20protection&context=DEFAULT_SELLER
After you receive the item back you can try and appeal the case.

Mentor1 week agoDid buyer open a Return Request for a damaged item? IF so and you accepted the return and got it back, make sure you refund by the date indicated.
If the item was damaged in shipment to the buyer, you would still have to refund, but you could file a damage claim with the carrier, but having it returned voids that option. You can still try and appeal, but if carrier requires buyer to have the item and packing for inspection your claim will be denied.
Now, unless you can show the buyer damaged the item, you are pretty much out of luck and there is nothing to report or appeal to ebay.

OP1 week agoSeems like a broken system to me. So basically I can order something and break it and return it and there's nothing you can do about it? Yeah this place is trash why would anyone want to pay for this service is beyond me. Too many shady people and it looks like some of them work for eBay too
