Counterfeit sports merchandise on eBay.
Summary: jusb1844 expressed concerns about counterfeit sports merchandise on eBay, sharing experiences of buying jerseys that appeared fake. They suggested eBay should enhance authentication measures for licensed sports apparel to protect buyers who may not easily identify counterfeits. lady_madonna pointed out that eBay relies on its Money Back Guarantee and prohibits listing counterfeit items, highlighting the platform's limitations in verifying authenticity. eburtonlab noted the impracticality of verifying each item due to cost and logistical challenges, suggesting buyers need to rely on trusted sellers and personal knowledge.
I'm writing to share feedback about counterfeit sports merchandise on eBay. I'm not reporting any specific seller. I want eBay to know that this problem appears to be widespread. Ebay's policy: https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/prohibited-restricted-items/fake-items-policy?id=4276
Over the past two months I bought five soccer jerseys from different sellers, and four appeared to be counterfeit. The signs were consistent: tags that didn't match each other or the garment size, country-of-origin details that contradicted the listing, license tags that differed from genuine ones, and internal product codes that show up online as counterfeit. Several listings also described the items as "officially licensed" or "by Adidas" when they were not.
In my experience, this isn't limited to a few bad actors. It looks like a large share of the jersey listings in search results are counterfeit. Buyers who aren't checking tags and product codes closely would have no way to tell, because many of these are very good copies.
I'd like to ask that eBay look at stronger verification for licensed sports apparel, such as an Authenticity Guarantee program like the ones available in other categories, and better screening of listings that claim official licensing. Or forcing the seller to say the product is counterfeit, so it is clear what you are buying.

Mentor1 week agoEbay cannot examine each listing/item for authenticity which is why they have the Money Back Guarantee for buyers to use if the buyer receives a non-authentic item.
Sellers cannot say that the product is counterfeit in the listing since it is prohibited for a seller to sell counterfeit items.

OP1 week agoI understand, and I did use the Money Back Guarantee route effectively. But buying five jerseys and getting four counterfeits suggests the problem goes beyond a few bad sellers. The guarantee puts the burden on buyers to spot fakes, and someone who doesn't know how to check tags or product codes would probably keep a counterfeit believing it was real. That isn't fair to buyers.
You're right that sellers won't write "counterfeit" in a listing, but many imply authenticity with wording like "officially licensed" or "by Adidas." If the policy prohibits counterfeit sales but this many listings get through, I'd like to see eBay invest in better enforcement for licensed sports apparel, such as authentication for popular jerseys, rather than relying on buyers to catch fakes after the fact.

Mentor1 week agoSince eBay never sees the product that the seller ships or what the buyer actually receives, and eBay has no specific expertise in such sports gear, eBay is in no position to identify a counterfeit jersey without requiring that every such item be shipped to an independent third party for expensive authentication, which very few buyers or sellers are willing to pay for outside of a few very high-priced categories like luxury handbags, shoes, watches and sports cards.
Unfortunately there is no real alternative to buyers knowing what they buy and buying what they know from sellers that they trust.
