Why is eBay allowing so many sellers to post counterfeit or replica items and represent them as genuine, real and authentic?

MentorAug 11, 2026 at 7:59 PMWith millions of sellers and millions of listings, there is no way that eBay can possibly confirm that any item is genuine, real, and authentic. Not at the time that the listing becomes active on eBay's platform.
Some types of items -- designer handbags, sneakers, watches, among others -- are forwarded to experts who contract with eBay to provide verification services. But not all items get that kind of scrutiny.
eBay does state, in the User Agreement, that sellers take full responsibility for the accuracy of their listing and the validity of their items.
Some people, however, are just dishonest.
If you, an eBay buyer, receive a counterfeit or replica item, you may file a Not As Described claim under eBay's Money Back Guarantee.
