Make sure the message contains nothing that might look like a phone number or email address to a simple bot scanning for such things. Scammers often include such contact information in some obscured fashion, so eBay filters for anything the might be contact information.
If your message contains only alpha text, with no numbers or special characters, you should be OK.
If you still have problems sending a message, go to the seller's feedback or profile page and use the contact link there. If prompted for an item number, use a current number or choose "not about an item" rather than using an expired number.
