Confused by Ebay's Seller Cancellation/Refund policy
I'm occasional user of Ebay and have had great success with it buying and selling film production equipment and other items over the past 10 years. I'm hoping someone can explain something that happened between myself and a seller a few weeks ago. Both of us have 100% positive feedback- again on limited sales.
I found a great deal and bought a couple of dining chairs for my son in Dallas. It was buy it now or best offer. I made an offer and it was accepted and my credit card was charged $62.26 for the chairs and shipping.
The shipping price on the listing was $7.84.
Two days after the purchase, the seller cancelled the purchase. When I messaged him to ask why he said, "I cancelled the order because you offered $50, but it made me pay $30 for shipping. So it wasn’t worth it."
I didn't know you could even do that. I've messed up the shipping calculation a number of times and always assumed I had to eat the difference.
Anyway, the problem is that even though I was charged $62.26, the refund issued back to my cc was only $53.12. So basically, I got no chairs and I paid this guy(or somebody) $10 bucks for his mistake.
I gave him a week to make it right and when he didn't do anything, I gave him a negative feedback...his first one. He says he was never given a choice of how much to refund.
I don't really care about the $10, but I'm not sure what happened? Can't get through the AI barricade at ebay to ask a question so I brought it here. Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks

Wow. Thank you for the feedback this is really helpful. I will walk thru your suggestions one at at time...but thanks for confirming what I also assumed about canceling a sale after you've sold something.

Mentor9 months agoIt sounds like the difference is possibly the sales tax, which the seller never gets. ebay gets that amount and sends it to your states revenue collection department. That refund amount will be coming from ebay soon.

I am not sure what happened. When he cancelled the sale, it should have been a full refund to you.
Did he 'cancel' or 'send a refund'?
If he sent a refund, please open an Item Not Received case to get the rest of the money owed to you.
-- Open an "Item Not Received Case". You can do that right here by clicking on the photo of your item and following the steps: https://www.ebay.com/help/buying/-/reporting-item-didnt-receive?id=4042
(If it is not yet time for a case to be opened, it will give you the exact date after you click the photo.)
The seller must respond within 3 business days to provide a delivery update, offer a replacement, or give you a refund.
If that doesn't work, contact use eBay's social media customer service to get assistance

Just sent a private message to the page explaining what happened.
And, yes the seller should have accepted his mistake and shipped the items, even if it was a loss. It's not acceptable for sellers to just cancel a sale they are unhappy with.
