Conflicting data in listings

Question: How can an item be listed as "Brand new in sealed box" but then be described as "For parts not working". Is this an attempt to make an end run around or otherwise nullify ebay's money back guarantee policy?

It depends on which is the item condition, and which is in the description.

eBay will go by the item condition. If an item is listed as "new" (or even "used") it is assumed to be fully working; if the item is not working it can be returned at the seller's expense for a full refund.

If the item description is "for parts or not working", a non-working item -- such as a vintage "new old stock" item may still be in a sealed package, but not guaranteed by the seller to be in working condition if removed from the box. Think of a first generation Sony Walkman still sealed in the box: the item may have never been used, but rubber belts may have degraded over time.

A "for parts" listing can still be returned for a refund if the description omits important facts, such as missing critical parts.

If you are not sure what the seller intends, contact the seller to see if the seller will explain. Perhaps the seller made a mistake.
