Charity Sale - shipping money goes to charity.
I've been gifted a car accessory item which I want to sell for the 100% benefit of a charity listed by Ebay.
This item is worth about £40 and will cost around £15 to ship (as it is over 1.2m long).
I checked Ebay's FAQ's and couldn't find anything about what happens to the shipping money paid by the buyer.
I contacted Live Chat and they confirmed that the sale price and shipping does not come to me, and I also don't receive the shipping money. Their suggestion was to reduce the charity donation to e.g. 80%, so I keep the 20% (less Ebay fees) to pay for the postage myself.
About 2 years ago I received a family inheritance item which I sold 100% for the same charity. The postage was about £40 due to the large size and weight. I'm sure I didn't have the same problem and I received the shipping fee to pay for what it cost me.
I am not a fan of the new system for two reasons -
1. It complicated to use - I now have to try and predict which of the 5% bands would leave me with the right money to pay for shipping.
2. I'm giving 100% of the item value to charity, paying for the shipping myself but having to list it as an "80% sale" which makes me look less than charitable and buyers might wonder why I am not giving 100% of the item's value to the charity. That might put off some buyers.
Any suggestions please ?
The only alternative I can think of is - 100% charity sale, collection only / the buyer provides their own shipping label. That is full of potential problems.

My experience last year was that only the item price goes to charity - I received all of the shipping money. We did try to get clarity on the policy without success, so I do not know if this is the new standard or not.
I have sold items with donations ranging from 20% to 100% - I don't think anyone questions why you are not giving 100%. Even a 10% donation is nice 🙂
Since the item is pricey to ship, I would list at less than 100%, just in case. You can always send the charity a second donation outside of eBay.

OP2 years agoThanks @wooden_flower , I've decided to list it for £50 with Free Postage. The charity will get 70% leaving £15 less Ebay fees for postage.
If anyone offers me less than £50, I will have to reduce the charity % to less than 70% to cover the fixed postage costs.
