Charged for fees and didn’t receive any funds?

I recently sold an item that had an electrical insulator that broke during shipping. The buyer reported the item as broken. There wasn’t anything I could do with it so I told the buyer to keep it . There wasn’t any point in getting it back. The item was $1500 and i didn’t even get the funds from eBay yet. eBay was wanting me to refund the entire amount even though I didn’t receive the funds. I called eBay and the girl on the phone said no problem they’ll take care of everything. Then I get a fee of $300. I didn’t realize at the time but I did pay for the insurance when shipping it. This all transpired over the last few weeks.. Am I just SOL. Am I the one that needs to file the insurance claim or does EBay do that since it was purchased through them.?

MentorAug 10, 2026 at 10:15 PMRefund your buyer in full ASAP. You cannot wait until you receive your payout. The refund will be paid from your linked checking account or an on-file payment method.
After you refund the buyer, YOU file the insurance claim since you are the one that shipped it.

you need to prove the item was broken due to negligence on the shipping company and not due to improper packaging
if the buyer opens a case and u don't refund, u will lose the fees ebay charged you, which would be pretty substantial on a $1500 sale
