Auction duration cycles are 1, 3, 5, 7 & 10 days. 1 and 3 days come with a $ 1.00 Special duration fee.
5, 7 & 10 days have no special fee and use one insertion.
When you list an item Auction style you need to start with WHEN you want it to end and then count backwards to the day you want it to start based on the duration periods eBay offers (above).
I am not sure of the exact window of time but years ago if I listed an auction with the wrong duration I could quickly change it once it was live. However, that function may or may not be available anymore. If it goes too long you would have to End the Auction and then Relist if with the desired duration, this would cost you one insertion to make that change.
Depending on WHEN you want to End the listing fees may apply and this page covers that: Ending a listing | eBay
