Catalytic converter
I’ve been told that buying an after market catalytic converter won’t turn your check engine light off, is this true

Your best bet is to go to a certified service center that deals with Catalytic converters. The sensor can also be faulty throwing a code too. It is best to let experts handle the issue. If you insist on doing that type of work yourself the car will have to run for a period of time after the repairs before the codes reset ... if they are going to reset.
