How does buying a car work on eBay

You find the car ON eBay. Not on craigslist or facebook or anywhere else, only eBay. If this car is in an ad anywhere that isn't eBay, and it says the sale will "be handled through eBay" – sometimes it'll say for "both our safety" – then it's a scam. If the seller wants payment with gift cards, it's a scam. We get asked about this scam every day, sometimes too late for the victim.
If the car is on eBay, then, keeping in mind that a sale is not binding, which means either the buyer or the seller can just walk away at any time,
• buy the car on eBay
• do not pay a deposit – if the seller insists on a deposit, tell him to jump in the lake
• go look at the car
• inspect it, or preferably have a mechanic inspect it
• decide if you still want it
• pay for the car and receive the endorsed title
