Can't ship for anything close to eBay-calculated shipping cost--what to do?
New to eBay, used their calculator to get a shipping cost of $18 for a small travel guitar. Now it's sold, and shipping costs are going to be at least $75, if I can even find a single box, which can only be bought in bulk at local stores, or shipped to arrive after the shipping deadline. The guitar & case are 36"x11"x4", and the closest box size is 42"14"x4".
I gather the shipping cost can't be changed once the item is sold. Do I have any options besides 1) eating the shipping cost myself, or 2) canceling the sale and getting dinged by eBay?
The buyer is about an hour and a half drive away--can I offer to deliver it to him next time I have to drive in that direction, arriving after the eBay-determined shipping date?

Your choices are as stated
1) eating the shipping cost, or
2) canceling the sale and getting dinged by eBay? (a defect)
OR
3) delivering in person, however the buyer can claim 'Item Not Received' and get a full refund.
-- If you are going to do this check with the buyer first, sell it as careful delivery to avoid damage in shipping.
(Ideally, you'd cancel the sale, refund the buyer from your own funds, relist with only local pickup, and have the buyer purchase again. Explain you will deliver. This is complex and requires the refund to come from your credit card before you get the buyer's payment)
eBay's shipping calculator works perfectly when the weight and dimensions are entered when you list.
What doesn't work well is the estimates that eBay provides new sellers.
If the guitar itself is 4" you want at least an 8" box to protect it. 2" in every direction.

By the way, where did the $75 cost come from?
What is the boxed item weight?
Using 42x14x4 or 42x14x8
I am coming up with prices in the $25 range for a delivery close to you. I've check eBay, Pirate Ship, and USPS
