cannot send any message to any seller
When I try to send any message to any seller the display shows the seller's name, the item name, the price, a button to "Buy It Now" and this message:

Below that message at the bottom of the screen are 2 "Send message" buttons that are inactive. When I try to type anything anywhere on the screen, no characters are displayed, regardless of content, and the "Send message" buttons remain inactive. I have never had this problem before.

To reply to the message you click/tap in the little gray field with "Send message," to get a cursor for typing your text. To send the message, click the paper-airplane icon to the right of the message field. If you want to attach images before sending, click the little landscape icon to the left of the message field.
