buying expensive jewelry
I see a ring I like but it's expensive.. it is guaranteed to be authenticated with IGI but I've read bad things about that.. how can I be sure the gold and the diamond are going to be tested properly?

OP8 months agothey're both diamonds..it's just one grows in the earth..the other one grows in a lab.. I prefer lab diamonds because I can get a bigger, better one at a way better price!.. I have a lot of lab grown diamond rings now but I don't like buying it unless it's in gold.. there's a 7 carat emerald cut in 14K for sale and it's beautiful but I don't like buying on websites like this.. it's a lot of money$$$$!

Mentor8 months agoHi @teribai0 eBay is the safest online retail site because of it's Money Back Guarantee. Do as @gosimus advised and read the eBay Help page on Items Not As Described at the posted link and familiarize yourself with the process and most importantly the timing. eBay stands behind the sales on its site for 30 days. If a buyer procrastinates beyond that, eBay cannot help. If you want to have an item independently tested, get on it quickly. You sound like you buy a lot of jewelry. Do you have a gold tester and a gem tester? If not, there are many available right here on eBay at every price point and perhaps you should think about investing in one. Good luck!

OP8 months agothank you!.. I do buy a lot of jewelry but I buy it from companies I trust.. not sure if I can trust eBay or they're authentication process.. I've read some negative things about it.. so if I do buy something I think I'm just going to have to make sure I have some place to take it to have it examined again.. I believe I do have a gold tester but not a gem tester so I will look for one thank you for the advice!

If you don't trust the International Gemological Institute, then you can have the ring tested locally at someplace that you do trust. If the gold and/or the gem turns out to be not authentic, then you can return the ring, shipping paid by the seller, for a full refund per eBay's Money Back Guarantee regarding Not As Described items. By the way, is that a lab-grown diamond or a mined diamond?
Help page regarding items that don't match the description: https://www.ebay.com/help/buying/returns-items-not-received-refunds-buyers/return-item-refund?id=4041
If you do buy that ring, and something is wrong with it, come back to this board and get advice before you do anything. Ordinarily, I'd say it's imprudent for a relatively new buyer to purchase something that s/he describes as expensive. It's easy to get your money back, but you have to do it right, and there are a few places in the process where if you mess up, you can bungle the return.
Do you know how to check the seller?

OP8 months agowell all you can really do is look at the reviews right?.. this company that is selling these big lab grown diamond rings only has six reviews so he's pretty new.. I tried to look up the name of the company in Google where it is and all that but I'm having trouble finding them.. could be because they're out of India?.. in that case I really don't know how to look up information on the company itself.. you have any suggestions?

Instead of my trying to remember everything on my own, let google A.I. do the work. I searched google for How to thoroughly vet a seller on eBay? and got an excellent answer. I recommend you do that same search. When the response opens, there might be a note that the results included how to "get" a seller. Just underneath that, click the "Search only for how to vet" link.

OP8 months agoThat's really good information!.. I will check it out.. I ordered a diamond tester like you advised and I believe I already have a gold testing kit.. I ordered a ring and it is going to IGI for inspection so I feel good about that but I'm still going to test it myself!.. thank you so much..You've helped me immensely!

Thank you for that. I have years of experience – more years than I like to contemplate, LOL – and also just a shade higher intelligence than the average bear, or so I've been told (thanks, Mom). But I learn most about the pitfalls and hazards right here on the boards. I frequently recommend that all users come to the boards regularly, even when they don't have a problem, to browse and learn from the questions and answers. Forewarned is forearmed.
