Buyer's address wrong in ebay system. item returned.
I was messaged by a buyer that my shipment to them had the wrong address and wasn't going to be delivered by Fedex. I had used the eBay shipping process that automatically creates the label, so I had no control over that. I told them their address is wrong in the system and they should correct it, but they insisted that they had put in the proper address on their end. I called Fedex and tried to get the address changed but they told me that the receiver had to do that. I relayed that to the buyer. They had already tried, and were told that the sender had to do it. So I went to the Fedex shipping office to enlist their help and they told me they couldn't do anything and I needed to call again which I did while still there. This time they told me that since I used the ebay system, that only ebay could change it. Ok, good luck with that. I messaged buyer to call and have package held for local pickup. They were told it was already on it's way back to sender. Buyer wants me to reship for free which, even if I wanted to, I can't because the address is still wrong in the system. I could modify the street name but not the zip code. I can't really see how I could have done anything differently to have headed this off or what to do next. What would you do? (thanks for letting me vent)

OP5 months agoLatest update-
I was able to finally contact the buyer directly and he told me they get mail there all the time with the address they specified. I went to the USPS website and was able put in the address they wanted and get a shipping label, and it was cheaper than through ebay. They got it about a week later, and they reimbursed for the new shipping. All's good now, right? Well not so much. Now Fedex is charging me an extra $16 for the original shipment, calling it 'underpaid' (no explanation). **bleep**..... really?...... They're going to charge me extra to return a package that they couldn't figure out how to deliver to the proper address. How would I contest this extra charge? It seems we're all at the mercy of 'the man'.

Mentor6 months agoeBay uses the address specified by the buyer so it is the buyers fault that they did not double check the address eBay was using for the package. Since they supplied the wrong address they would have to pay for you to resend the package.

OP6 months agoI agree with you in principal, but there's a bit more to the story. They work at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and said as part of the government, they can't pay for extras. (I doubt that's the case but if they won't pay, then what?) They could file a package not delivered and then I'd have to refund them. Also, it was a really sweet sale on 7 items that are very slow moving.

OP6 months agoAlso, what would the process be to have them pay you for reshipping an item that was already purchased and shipped?

Mentor6 months agoIt would have to be outside of eBay such as through a PayPal invoice if you have a PayPal account or something like Venmo.
