Buyer wants to send certified check, then pickup at my home!

Question

I am selling a set of tires. The Buyer wants to send a certified check to my home address. "After the check clears" he wants to have his "shipping company" pickup the tires.

For a few reasons, this doesn't feel right. Any guidance would be suggested.

This sounds like a very common "overpayment" scam.

Scammers count on sellers not understanding that it can take weeks for a counterfeit cashier's check to be detected. The seller may think that just because the check was deposited and the deposited amount was credited to the seller by the bank that the amount cannot later be removed once the check is identified as fraudulent.

Typically the "buyer" will then find an excuse why the transaction can not take place and demand an immediate refund via untraceable means such as a wire transfer or a cash app. The original cashier's check is found to be fraudulent, and the money that had been deposited disappears from the seller's balance, and the seller winds up losing the entire "refund" amount.
