Buyer wants to return item for USPS damage
Ebay is making me accept a return for an item that was damaged in transit by the USPS. Ebay is making me accept the return when I didn't ship the item damaged. $250 down the drain because someone is mad over a slice in the box.

You are responsible for the package until delivery, which is why eBay expects you to accept the return if it arrived damaged.
If damaged enough to file a claim, ask the buyer for photos of the item and the box. File your claim at https://www.usps.com/help/claims.htm. You have $100 of coverage unless you added more.
If you’re going to file a claim, ask the buyer to hold the item and the box for inspection by their PO. Ask nicely, since they do not have to help. They also do not have to wait for your claim to get their refund. If you want the item returned, ask them to print the label, but hold the item until you know about the claim.
As soon as they have printed the label, you should use the ‘refund buyer now’ option. If you don’t, they will have to ship it and that will void your claim.
If a slice in the box doesn’t change the value in your opinion, just have them send it back and resell it as is. It seems it does change the value in the buyer’s opinion. You could also try offering a partial refund for the change in value and be done with it.
