Buyer returned his old item and kept sellers item
Buyer returned his old item and kept sellers item. Why is eBay not protecting me as a seller. I’ve sent pics of item received with different serial #’s. I always mark my items so that buyers don’t switch items. Apparently doesn’t help me when eBay is not on sellers side. I had four high value items switched with buyers old damaged parts and I’m at lost with money and item. I need help.

·3 years agoFile mail fraud with USPS and a police report, in your city and theirs (should be able to do it online), then use those reports to appeal the case.

OP3 years agoThank You. I tried all that no help. eBay just doesn’t care and always sides with the buyer.

Mentor3 years agoIt isn't that they don't care, it is that they have no way of knowing who is telling the truth, so they just don't do anything. I know it is frustrating. I've been through it plenty of times myself. The only thing that keeps most of us here is that most transactions go off without a problem.

OP3 years agoThank you. In the past I was able to dispute my case and also had my local police department write up a report so I can send it to eBay. Now they just don’t do it to plead a case for yourself. Like their getting lazier and lazier. Do all sellers just take easy way out and refund the minimum amount just to get something.

Mentor3 years agoIt is not because they are lazy, it is because they don't always know who is telling the truth. And without a hearing of sorts, they aren't likely to know. If they went that far, it would cost Ebay a heck of a lot of money and we would have to pay for that with higher fees to cover their expenses.
I doubt any seller "take the easy way out", they just do what is necessary to keep their account healthy and in good standing. INADs are a difficult thing for any seller. INRs are easy and we are well protected on those.

Mentor3 years agoYes, opening a police report, especially if you have photos of the serial number, and including it in your appeal to ebay, is the only way to get ebay's attention for possible resolution.
Also as suggested, I often will send a message to the buyer that it appears there was tampering with shipment as the serial numbers don't match. And ask the buyer to please cooperate with the postal inspectors or their local police as ebay requires you to file a report for them to look further into the problem. Often this tactic has good results.

Mentor3 years agoI completely agree for what it is worth. In my last post I gave a suggestion for a message to be sent to the buyer as well.

Mentor3 years agoSince Ebay isn't going to help, I'll offer another suggestion. But before you do this, make sure you are relaxed and can do it without any finger pointing or emotions involve. Just be Polite, professional and factual.
I would send the buyer an email. But you have got to be in the right mind to do this. I suggest something like this.
I have received your item back and you have been fully refunded. I just wanted to let you know that the item I received back was not the same serial number as the one I sold and shipped to you. Just in case anyone contacts you, I am reporting this discrepancy to Ebay, USPS because it is a federal crime to use them as part of committing a fraud and to the Police. So if someone from any one of these places contacts you, just be honest and let them know what happened so they can track down who switched the products. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Mentor3 years agoI am so sorry this happened to you. Ebay has no way of knowing what happened with the item and they won't get in the middle of a he said / she said.
However since you have a serial number maybe that would help, I'm not sure. In your listing did you take a clear pic of the serial number and did you state it in your listing. Both would help. I suggest you contact Ebay and tell them this and see what they tell you. Please come back and share what they said.
I would suggest that you contact Ebay for Business on Facebook or Twitter for the better trained CSRs.
