Buyer return damaged due to poor packaging
I sold a PS2 game complete in the original case. The buyer was unhappy with it stating it was very scratched. I accepted the return and provided a shipping label. When I received the item the case was broken. I shipped it originally sandwiched between cardboard inside a bubble mailer. They shipped back in a plain envelope. I’m hesitant to refund the full amount. What would you do in this scenario?

You already sent the buyer an item that was "very scratched" which is why he returned it. Returning an item costs the buyer time and money (even if you paid for the label).
Yes the buyer should have packaged it better, but the item was already damaged. I wouldn't try to quibble over this. You owe the buyer a full refund. Otherwise, you'll receive a defect on your selling record.

OP8 months agoI take issue with the premise that I wasted the buyer’s time. Returns also cost me time and money. I sold an item listed as fair condition. And it works. I wasn’t trying to rip anyone off or scam anyone. Just selling some doubles. And I accepted the return at my expense and time. I think it’s a poor attitude to say it was already damaged so who cares if it gets more damaged. That wouldn’t fly in any other retail scenario.
Regardless, you’re right to advise not to quibble over it and I appreciated that input. I’ve fully refunded the buyer.

No, no, no I didn't say you wasted the buyer's time. I said returning items costs the buyer time and money. I didn't make a judgement about you. I also didn't say "who cares" if the item gets more damaged. I understand that my response probably wasn't the one you wanted, but please don't read into it something that's not there. I'm just trying to stick to the facts and suggest how I would handle this situation. It's easier for me to take the emotion out of it because it's not my situation.
I also understand you lost time and money too. Sellers don't benefit from taking returns, but that's part of doing business.
Hopefully, you can put this behind you and move forward to many successful sales.
