If you had insurance on the package, the buyer should not have returned the item. If you can verify that the item returned was the one you sent, you can refund the buyer in full and write it off your taxes. You will not be able to file an insurance claim with the carrier since the buyer sent the item back. There is no way for the carrier to determine when the damaged occurred.
