Buyer making false claims about an item I sold them.
I sold a pool cue on eBay. I packaged it myself and hand delivered it to the US Post Office where it was shipped. Everything seemed fine until the buyer received the cue and claimed it was a different cue than the one I sent him. He sent me pictures of the box and the packing material with an old, beat up piece of junk cue that wasn't remotely like the one I sent.
I find it hard to believe that someone at the post office swapped cues, that just seems extremely unlikely. So I can only conclude that he is trying to scam me.
I have reported him, but it sounds like I'm screwed if he files for a return.
What can I possibly do to avoid this in the future. It makes me never want to sell anything on eBay again.

Unfortunately, that is a Buyer scam return that you cannot avoid in the future. Below is a link to your Seller protections which in certain cases can cut your losses on a bogus claim and return like that.
