Buyer Likely Took Gemstone from Ring, was Granted a Refund!
Summary: mjae23 shared an experience where they sold a ring on eBay, but the buyer claimed the gemstone was missing upon receipt and accused them of fraud. Despite their suspicion that the buyer pried out the gemstone, eBay granted a full refund to the buyer. mjae23 expressed frustration over the perceived unfairness toward sellers. rfmtm suggested strategies for handling such situations, including delaying refunds, reporting suspected fraud, and appealing eBay's decision.
Hello - I recently sold a ring to a buyer, sent the ring in a secure, foam ring box, bubble wrap and an outer box. Buyer then sent a photo to eBay of ring without the gemstone, wrote rude and accusatory messages to me claiming that I was trying to scam him, which is ridiculous given that my name and address is on packaging. I suspect that buyer pried the gemstone out of the ring. I was advised by eBay to honor the "return." So, I had a label sent. When ring arrived back to me with the gemstone missing and indication that it had been pried out of setting, I contacted eBay to dispute providing a full refund as I now have a damaged ring without the gemstone. eBay honored his request and provided 100% refund! I sent an email appeal and will attempt to have them call me tomorrow. How is this fair to sellers? Especially when eBay charges us per sale and for promotions? It feels very one-sided.

Mentor1 month agoSorry you didn't come here first as often you can bluff the buyer as follows:
Wait till the last day to refund.
Tell buyer you are sorry, but you want to make sure it just wasn't a mistake or mail theft before you report it to ebay's fraud department, file an insurance claim, report it to the postal inspectors, and file a report with their local police for mail tampering and/or fraud. Plus would they please cooperate with the investigation. This often makes the problem go away.
If you are still forced to refund:
REPORT the buyer for abuse of the ebay MBG.

Then appeal the refund:
