Buyer has requested address change through Ebay messaging after they have paid for it.
Buyer has paid for item and is now requesting an address change as they are in a temporary location. They made the request through Ebay messaging. Am I protected if I go ahead and ship to this different address?

You will lose all seller protection if you ship it somewhere other than the address provided by Ebay.
If you have verified that it is your actual buyer that sent the message, you can reply and ask if they want to cancel the transaction so that they can repurchase it using the correct shipping address during the checkout process.
