how can a buyer be one of the first bidders then the last bidder to win the item, then all of a sudden request a cancellation using the ''order placed by mistake" option?? makes no sense.. then eBay says please cancel order leaving me high n dry

These things happen sometimes.
They probably placed a high bid to start with and either forgot they had bid and now don't want it, or was bidding on more than one.
You can always view their buyer feedback to see if they have a record of bid retractions, but ultimately, you are far better off to cancel the transaction and just try again.
I have had this happen multiple times. Not much you can really do about it, and trying to force the sale will only lead to problems. Far easier on you to cancel and relist.
I moved more and more items to Buy it Now (BIN) rather than auctions, but often I will list a new item as an auction first for a round or two before moving it to BIN.
