If the buyer opened a 'return request' ... then you need to decide whether the item is worth spending the return shipping money in order to get it back before issuing a refund. If you don't want it back ... then refund the buyer in full.
If you purchased insurance, then ask the buyer to hold on to the item AND packaging materials while you open a claim online.
