Boyfriend lost $700 guitar to scammer. eBay completely negligent throughout entire process.
when a buyer requested to return my boyfriend‘s guitar with blurry pictures of a carpet that apparently outlined “damage†- my naive and fairly-new-to-eBay boyfriend tried to deny the return, as there was no damage and buyer had already changed the strings. He ACTUALLY reached out to eBay and ASKED THEM WHAT TO DO — they advised him to “report fraudulent buyerâ€, ADMITTING that they were aware this was a scam, and advised him to do absolutely nothing else and they would investigate the “caseâ€. After a few days went by, he called back. They told him that now that he didn’t automatically refund the person and he opened a case, they could keep the item And the money. Actually, they didn’t tell him this .. I DID!! My boyfriend had to ask , line for line, “are you saying they can keep my item and my money?â€
Sent a very heartfelt message to the buyer about how he was selling the guitar to pay rent, we don’t have any money. No answer.
eBay rep took him for a ride even though he couldn’t speak perfect English.. I wasn’t there to take the phone and drill them so he was his usual passive self who expects the best from everyone. Lo - and behold, they charged my boyfriend $700 and never even confirmed that a shipping label was being made up for the returner/SCAMMER. Told my boyfriend that “we can’t force anyone to return anything†in, once again, very broken English. Wish I was there to take the phone and make a better case or negotiate with the rep. My boyfriend wasn’t emotional or rude on the phone, he was very cordial and polite.
never selling ANYTHING on this site again. So few seller protections. We are out $1100 and opening a case is ** exactly** what eBay instructed my boyfriend to do. He called them because he wanted to make sure he was taking proper precautions not to lose his money. It’s despicable.
I can’t stand this site anymore.

We advice to accept a return, if opened because of a problem. We advice to send a free return label and return the money when the item is back. That is also what eBay wants sellers to do.
If you don't and the buyer asks eBay to step in, eBay takes the money from the seller and doesn't ask the buyer to return the item anymore. The seller gets a defect also.
