Mentor3 years agoYou are not bidding against a computer. You are bidding against another user that has submitted a higher bid.
eBay only displays enough of the high bidder's bid amount to take the lead by up to one bid increment.
When someone submits a bid that is below the high bidder's amount, eBay will increase the current bid amount by one bid increment above the second highest bidder's amount. The original bidder remains in the lead until someone submits a bid that is higher than the current high bidder's maximum bid amount. Then the new bidder becomes the high bidder, and the current bid amount is increased to be one bid increment above the old high bidder's maximum bid, up to the current high bidder's maximum bid amount.
