@eburtonlab is correct - a properly placed high bid will win.
Sniping just places the bid for you.

The way to win when bidding is to be the highest bidder (or, in the case of a tie, to be the earlier bidder). There is no trick to that.
You do not need an app to bid higher, just a willingness and ability to pay. Decide the maximum amount you are willing to spend in advance, taking into consideration shipping and taxes, and bid the appropriate amount once, as late in the auction as you can comfortably manage without missing the end of the auction. If you are bidding a round number, consider adding a few odd cents to lessen the chances of a tie.

I've been reading that some members attempting to snipe have been thwarted by eBay's recent innovation of a requirement to enter a verification code they send. I have a theory – maybe hope would be a better word – that I haven't had the opportunity to test yet. Maybe placing an early bid for a modest amount would satisfy that new verification, and subsequent bids wouldn't require repetition. Maybe getting it out of the way once would let a member then snipe like we always have. That's a lot of maybes.
