·1 year agoSniping is a defensive tactic that is the best single defense against shilling sellers. You have no need and no right to know anything about my bid to be able to bid effectively. If you can't decide your true maximum to bid in 7 days why do you believe you will do a better job in 5 minutes (or whatever time you think you should be allowed to react) while in an emotional state over being outbid? On the other hand 5 minutes is plenty of time (particularly if it is extended by another 5 minutes as most auction extension proponents want) for a shiller to drive the price up to your supposedly hidden maximum and then retract the last bid if s/he goes over.
eBay's auction format is what makes it fair to those in up to 24 timezones with different work/sleep/computer schedules. Anyone can bid what the item is worth to them at any time and anyone can set up with a third party (there are reliable and secure ones which offer free limited use) to submit that bid in the last few seconds to get the defensive benefits of not having one's hidden maximum out there for others (again, including shilling sellers) to probe or otherwise base their bids on. Making it so those who are able to be there to react at the end have the advantage is what would be unfair.

You aren't a victim, you just didn't bid enough. It isn't the last bidder who wins necessarily, it's the highest bidder. Why don't you try a few snipes yourself? Be sure to add a few extra cents to your bid – like 14¢ or you pick your own number – because a tie goes to the earliest bid, so, if you do tie another bid, they'll naturally be earlier because you'll be bidding as late in the auction as you can manage.

Mentor1 year agoeBay allows anyone to bid right up until the auction ends. That is how online auctions work.

If someone outbid your maximum bid, that can happen in an auction. If you were willing to bid higher, you should have done that when you had the chance rather than waiting until you were outbid.

What time, on an auction, say, that ends at 10:42:47, should bidding be stopped?
Because what ever time that is, is when I want to place my bid.
Savvy bidders bid once, bid their maximum , and the bid as late as possible.
You were actually a victim of not bidding enough.
