It is very difficult to "accidentally" place a bid on an eBay auction. What were the circumstances (not your spin on it, but a play by play of what you actually did and what happened vs. what you expected to happen)?
The seller is under absolutely no duty to correct your accidents. S/he is very much within his/her rights to hold you to your obligation to pay and to cancel for non-payment (with consequences affecting your ability to buy in the future) after 4 days.
