How did I get outbid by $5 when I was the high bidder when the clock ran down. In fact the winning bid never appeared as a bid. I simply received a notice I was outbid.

Mentor3 years agoBids can be received by eBay on servers throughout the world. Just because a bid is not shown on your own computer as the time runs out does not mean that eBay has not received a bid before the auction ends. It may take a few seconds for bid histories around the world to be updated.
Bidders should expect that others will bid at the end of the auction too late for any other bidder to see and react to in time, and place their own bids accordingly.
If you calculate the maximum amount you are willing to pay, taking into account any shipping or taxes, and successfully bid that amount before the auction ends, the only way you can lose is if another bidder is willing to bid more than you and does so before the auction ends, or if another bidder bids the same amount, earlier than you (since in the event of a tie, the earlier bidder is considered the winner).
Once the auction is over, you can use a desktop browser to view the entire bid history and see when each bid was received by eBay, and compare that to the start time shown at the bottom of the bid history where the time is displayed to the second.
