Sometimes there's not a buy it now option. It's terrible to wait 24 hours and then the sellers don't even reply. And when you're giving a best offer there should be a way of canceling it if you find a better deal
If you are not patient enough to wait 24 hours, don't make the offer. Look for the "better deal" BEFORE you make the offer.
And there is ALWAYS a Buy It Now (or an auction you can bid on) if you can make a Best Offer; Best Offer is not a standalone listing format.
AND if it is auction Best Offers end when the auction receives the first bid, and all offers and counteroffers automatically and immediately expire at that time. Also when the listing ends (auction ends, someone uses a Buy It Now or another offer is accepted in a single-item listing, seller manually ends the listing) all offers and counteroffers expire then.
eBay tried out various times for how long a Best Offer could remain pending before it expired (if it didn't expire sooner), including giving the offeror options on how long. They seem to have settled on 24 hours as striking the best balance between the needs and desires of buyers and sellers.

The only way it doesn't take 24 hours is if the seller accepts or declines the offer. If you can't wait, then use the Buy It Now option.
