Being charged Customs and Tarrifs fees months later on a item that was list as Free Shipping.
I purchased an item from Canada that advertised free shipping. At the time of the purchase (last year) the listing didnt have any Import fees notated. There was no customs or tariffs fees listed. Months later the seller made changes to the listed item to now include Import fees, Customs and Tariffs. FedEx is sending me letters saying I owe them these fees. Ive contacted the buyer but they say its out of there hands and can no-longer refund any amount because its been to long. Ebay wont return or give me any conclusion (I got through once) and now they just cant hear me on the phone at all. Ive already paid FedEx the $40 now to avoid collections. I shouldnt have to pay this!

OP5 months agoI purchased my item on Sep 8, 2025. I paid for the item here on Ebay (no fees) the seller shipped the item and I received it. Done deal, so I thought. In February (2026) I started receiving texts from FedEx about a unpaid customs bill. (thought it was spam) Then, I received a bill in the mail for it. The Customs FedEx bill I received had the item in which it pertained to listed. It was a bill (to me) concerning the item I had purchased in September on Ebay. I honestly had no idea that I had bought an item from Canada in the first place. It was an auto part and It was already installed on my vehicle.
The seller still has the item for sale on ebay but now the listing includes references to Import fees. The seller updated this information on December 10th of 2025 The seller updated the international shipping terms (after I made my purchase from them).

Unless I am way off base this is what I understand.
-Tariffs went into effect on March 4, 2025 for inbound shipments from Canada is what I understand
-Free shipping is just for the package weight and size portion of the transaction and has nothing to do with the landed package in the US and any customs, duties or tariffs that may apply based on the price and value of the item being shipped.
-I could be wrong but the carrier charges the recipient for tariffs but from what I understand they have to be paid before the carrier releases the package for final delivery.
-Was the FedEx bill to you specific to the item you purchased last year? And by "last year" do you have at lest the month it was purchased in?
-I had bad experiences with FedEx years ago and stopped using them ... personally I don't trust them based on my own experience.
