Baseball card authentication
The authentication process is very poor and is actually lopsided towards the seller and potentially give scam sellers an avenue. If a raw card is authenticated, it means absolutely nothing. If a seller lists a card that is near mint and it goes for $2000 and eBay puts authentication on it, they aren’t authenticating the grade. If PSA gives that same card an authentication rating it’s probably only worth $100. And here’s the kicker, as a buyer you can’t dispute the card because they authenticated it. I recently bought 5 Mattingly rookies for 2000 and got no authentication. That’s 400/ card. It’s a very bad system. Graded cards don’t need authentication and expensive raw cards can’t simply be marked as authentic. Example. I list a 1960 topps Mickey Mantle that happens to be trimmed but I say it’s near mint. Someone may buy that card for $3000. I ship it to eBay. They’re not looking for trimmed, they mark it authentic. A PSA 1960 Topps Mickey Mantle graded Authentic is worth $200 while a near mint graded is worth $3000. It’s very flawed
