Bad eBay advice
When filling out the form to sell an item eBay quoted a shipping cost of $8.00-$14.00 using usps.
The shipping cost was $78.00 with usps.
If eBay can’t do better than that then they should stop giving out shipping costs. The price of the item I sold was $175.00. I wouldn’t have even bothered with eBay had I known the shipping was going to cost almost half of the selling price of the item.

Mentor1 month agoI am guessing that the $8.00-$14.00 you saw was the shipping cost from your zipcode to your zipcode. If you input an accurate weight for the package, along with the dimensions of the package, and using calculated shipping, buyers will see the cost from your zipcode to their zipcode.
The aircleaner shows +$85.44 delivery to me in 92802.

The price of the item has nothing to do with the price of shipping.
The price of USPS Ground Advantage shipping is based on the size dimensions of the package you are sending, the weight of that package, and the distance between the seller (you) and the buyer.
When you created the listing, did you enter an accurate package weight and dimensions?
Did you send it via USPS Priority Mail or perhaps UPS rather than USPS Ground Advantage as shown in your listing?

OP1 month agoHow often does someone get an estimate for shipping on eBay? They should not be giving estimates for shipping as they obviously don’t have that ability. And the price quoted by usps was the lowest one.

Mentor1 month agoWhen making your listing did you actually enter the weight and dimensions of the packaged ready to ship item or did you just accept what eBay estimated? You never accept eBay estimates since they are based on category averages and not your specific item. What were the dimensions and weight of the item you entered into the listing? What were the actual dimensions and weight of the package you sent? Keep in mind that any package over one cubic foot will be charged by DIM (dimensional) weight and not the actual weight of the package. The bigger the package the higher the weight will be calculated at. DIM weight is determined by the shipping carrier rules and not eBay.

Mentor1 month agoThe shipping estimates in listings offered by my selling ID have always very accurate.
Before I create an eBay listing, I find a box or envelope that will hold the item, and then I weigh the box/envelope with the item inside it. I might add another ounce or possibly two to allow for packing materials such as packing peanuts or crumpled paper or bubble wrap. Then I measure the size of the box/envelope.
When I get to those fields in the Create the Listing process, I type those numbers into the appropriate fields: I listed two things the other day that both had the weight as 0 pounds and 6 ounces, and the package size as 10 x 12 x 2.
I use eBay's Calculated Shipping in my listings.
It is almost always completely accurate. Within eBay, I have never needed to pay $50-$60 more for USPS postage than the buyer paid
I might have to pay a few cents more to pay for and print the mailing label than the buyer pays, especially if there has been a USPS rate increase or if my final package truly weighs an ounce or two more than my original estimate.
I accept that tiny "loss".
