Automatic payment the EBAY took!
I won a bid on an item and was going to pay for it via PAYPAL (was going to do a 4 payment option), but EBAY went and automatically took the payment!!!! Like WHAT?!?!?!? Does any one have any information on this type of transaction? I wanted to change the mailing address also - but noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

·2 years agoeBay had been "experimenting" with requiring pre-authorization of payment for Best Offers for over a year and a half (started prior to Halloween 2021), adding more and more users into the test group required to do so (sellers can opt their listings out of it; buyers cannot opt out once they are assigned). Too many users were making offers and then not paying when it was accepted, and too many of those were scammers who would try to get the seller to text or email them to get their number/email address to send fake payment messages to.
They have now officially made it permanent and all buyers are now required to pre-authorize payment for Best Offers they make on listings for sellers who have not opted out of the program. They started trying it out on auction bids (with a smaller group of buyers that is growing) in Spring or early Summer 2023 and that is still experimental. They will also start experimenting with requiring pre-authorization or payment for accepting offers from sellers soon.
When you make an offer or place a bid that requires pre-authorization you get a confirmation screen that includes the opportunity to change the payment source and shipping address from your defaults. THAT is when you can change one of both, not after you have won. And removing the defaults from your My eBay: Account: Payment and/or Addresses respectively does NOT change anything, other than you will have to enter them again when you go to make the offer or place the bid that requires the pre-authorization.

Not exactly. Sellers have this option in their Buyer Requirements to require buyers that are going to bid on a listing or make an offer must put in a payment source to be charged if they win the auction or the seller accepts the offer.
HOWEVER, sellers can turn off these new requirements located in their site preferences for Buyer Requirements.
And I've seen nor heard of any test like @robcmp22 described. It doesn't mean it didn't exist, but if it did this is the first I've heard about it.

Mentor2 years agoThis sounds like when you went to place your original bid on the auction, you were required to select your payment option if you were to win the auction. That is the only time I'm aware of when Ebay does this.

OP2 years agoThank you for the response, honestly all I did was make the bid as I did in the past, didn't notice any options. But I will be checking in the future. I deleted all of my credit cards from ebay at this point so it does not happen again. I have been purchasing from ebay for a long time, never encountered this. I guess they made some changes and I looked through them. Thanks again
