Are we being ripped off?
I just entered a higher bid ($5.76) on an item that I was already the active top bidder (at a$ 3.06 purchase price). In doing so, eBay not only increased my private top bid (to $5.76), they also increased my ACTIVE top bid (the purchase price to $3.25) so that now I have to pay more than I did before, even though there was no intervening other bidder to increase my active bid. Why?
I've been around eBay a long time, and it never operated like this. If you were top bidder, could always increase your overall bid without actually increasing your actual purchase price.
Imagine this happening to millions of bidders (and possibly numerous times)! LOTS of money made by eBay and lost by buyers. (Incidentally, I contacted eBay once before about this issue and they told me they would fix this "glitch"....apparently not.)

Mentor10 months agoRaising your bid as the current high bidder would actually change the price when there is a reserve on the auction and the new bid was above the reserve amount and the previous bid was below it; in that case, the current price should jump to the reserve amount.
If you were the high bidder and the next highest bidder's bid was within one bid increment of your high bid -- forcing the current bid amount to be your maximum bid amount at the time -- then bidding again might raise the current price to a full increment above the second highest bidder's amount. I say "might" because eBay has operated both ways in the past; in some cases bidding again increased the price, and in other cases bidding again did not raise the price.

The only way I can provide advice about this is with the eBay Item Number for the listing.
When a buyer raises their own bid, it shouldn't raise the displayed bid, but I would need to see the bidding history.
