Appealing a return
Summary: jay4daneal is upset that eBay allowed a buyer to return an item five months after the initial claim, which was thought to be resolved. They express frustration over eBay's decision, questioning if an appeal is possible. eastlaneave suggests the issue might be related to a chargeback from the buyer's credit card company. mr_lincoln adds that a dispute might have been filed with PayPal within their 180-day window, explaining potential reasons for the return allowance.
eBay is allowing a buyer to return an item5 months after their original claim that only one of the 2 pieces were in the box. After much back and forth with the buyer in may, I assumed this case was closed in my favor. Now in September I get a message from eBay saying they are allowing the buyer to return and I will have to give a full refund. There was no damage to the box, I packed it myself at the post office, I paid for the entire weight of both pieces and the guys story has been ever changing since the beginning. This is unbelievable to me. Can I appeal. Why would they allow a return all these months later. Thoroughly disgusted with eBay.

They may not have been damage to the box when you shipped, but that doesn't mean there wasn't damage when the item was delivered. The damage during transit could have resulted in one of the items falling out
This is not eBay's doing, it's the credit card company. It's always less costly for the seller to handle these issues through an eBay case rather than through a credit card chargeback. Since this wasn't resolved back in May, the buyer had no choice but to go through his credit card company. You may have to pay a fee assessed by the credit card for the chargeback and the buyer will not be required to return what he did receive. Back in May, you could have filed an insurance claim through USPS, but unfortunately it's too late for that now.

eBay does not allow returns after 5 months. I suspect that the Buyer has filed a dispute with their funding source.
If PayPal was the Buyer's funding source here is one thing I found on that:
PayPal Disputes and Returns After 5 Months
Yes — if the purchase is still within PayPal’s 180‑day dispute window, a buyer can open a dispute and request a return/refund, even after 5 months, but the type of claim matters.
How PayPal’s time limits work
According to PayPal’s official rules:
Item Not Received claims: You must file a dispute within 180 days of the date you sent the payment to the seller.
Significantly Not as Described claims: You must file within 30 days of delivery or within 180 days of payment — whichever comes first.

That sounds frustrating.
Is it eBay or is it the buyer's credit card company that is forcing the return?
Buyer's can file chargebacks and eBay has to comply with the credit card company.
